Big News! Instagram has added a feature that allows you to add your pronouns to your bio. The update will enable people to add up to four particular pronouns to their bio by following a few steps.
Since the update doesn’t include every pronoun, Instagram says people can fill out a form to have a pronoun added, if it’s not already available, or add it to their bio instead. So how do you update, and why is this important? Follow along.
Watch this step-by-step tutorial from an excellent ally, Sander Jennings, explaining the entire process.
So before even following these steps, you may be contemplating if you should add the pronouns to your bio. Well, here are a few reasons you should:
- It helps create a safe space- Using your pronouns in signatures and social media biographies tells everyone that you are not going to assume their gender
- It destigmatizes discussions about gender. The inclusion of pronouns by one of the most significant social applications sets a great precedent. It is an essential move towards genuine inclusivity in the workplace and broader society.
- You shouldn't assume someone's gender pronouns by their appearance. When someone is referred to with the wrong pronoun (misgendered), it can make them feel disrespected, invalidated, dismissed, alienated, or hurt. The new feature will help make misgendering less commonplace in many situations.
Whether you identify as LGBTQ+ or an ally, the new update is something that Pride Palace encourages all people to participate in. Make sure to follow the Pride Palace Instagram to keep up with all of the value-based posts we provide for our community.
