Β
Welcome toΒ Episode 2 of our LGBTQ+ educational series! π This time, weβre focusing on non-binary identitiesβwhat they mean, the symbolism of the non-binary flag, and why breaking persistent myths is essential for equality and respect.
What Does Non-Binary Mean?
Non-binary is an umbrella identity for people whose gender exists outside the categories of strictly βmanβ or βwoman.β Non-binary folks may identify with aspects of both genders, neither, or something entirely unique. This identity reflects the vast diversity of human experience.
Importantly, non-binary is not a new conceptβcultures worldwide have recognized genders beyond the binary for centuries. From the mΔhΕ« of Hawaiβi to Two-Spirit identities in Indigenous North American cultures, gender diversity is part of our global history.
They/Them Pronouns
One of the most common pronouns used by non-binary people is they/them. Though some argue it βisnβt grammatically correct,β this is untrueβsingular βtheyβ has been used in English for hundreds of years (even by Shakespeare!).
Respecting someoneβs pronouns is a basic act of dignity. It signals recognition of their identity and helps create safer, more inclusive spaces. Learn more in our Gender Pronoun Guide.
The Non-Binary Pride Flag
The Non-Binary Pride Flag was created in 2014 by activist Kye Rowan to give non-binary people a distinct symbol of pride. Its colors represent the spectrum of gender outside the binary:
- π Yellow: People whose gender exists outside the binary
- π€ White: Identities with many or all genders
- π Purple: A mix of masculine and feminine identities
- π€ Black: People who identify as agender
Displaying this flag affirms the validity and vibrancy of non-binary lives. You can find it here: π Non-Binary Pride Flag
Myths & Realities
Despite growing visibility, myths about non-binary identities persist. Letβs address them:
-
Myth: βItβs just a phase.β
Reality: Non-binary people exist across cultures and generations. Itβs not a trendβitβs a real identity. -
Myth: βThere are only two genders.β
Reality: Gender is a social and cultural construct, and many societies have always recognized more than two. -
Myth: βPronouns are just grammar.β
Reality: Pronouns are about respect. Using correct pronouns affirms someoneβs identity and prevents harm.
Why This Education Matters
