Welcome to Episode 2 of our LGBTQ+ educational series! 🌈 This time, we’re focusing on non-binary identities—what they mean, the symbolism of the non-binary flag, and why breaking persistent myths is essential for equality and respect.

What Does Non-Binary Mean?

Non-binary is an umbrella identity for people whose gender exists outside the categories of strictly “man” or “woman.” Non-binary folks may identify with aspects of both genders, neither, or something entirely unique. This identity reflects the vast diversity of human experience.

Importantly, non-binary is not a new concept—cultures worldwide have recognized genders beyond the binary for centuries. From the māhū of Hawai‘i to Two-Spirit identities in Indigenous North American cultures, gender diversity is part of our global history.

They/Them Pronouns

One of the most common pronouns used by non-binary people is they/them. Though some argue it “isn’t grammatically correct,” this is untrue—singular “they” has been used in English for hundreds of years (even by Shakespeare!).

Respecting someone’s pronouns is a basic act of dignity. It signals recognition of their identity and helps create safer, more inclusive spaces. Learn more in our Gender Pronoun Guide.

The Non-Binary Pride Flag

The Non-Binary Pride Flag was created in 2014 by activist Kye Rowan to give non-binary people a distinct symbol of pride. Its colors represent the spectrum of gender outside the binary:

  • 💛 Yellow: People whose gender exists outside the binary
  • 🤍 White: Identities with many or all genders
  • 💜 Purple: A mix of masculine and feminine identities
  • 🖤 Black: People who identify as agender

Displaying this flag affirms the validity and vibrancy of non-binary lives. You can find it here: 👉 Non-Binary Pride Flag

Myths & Realities

Despite growing visibility, myths about non-binary identities persist. Let’s address them:

  • Myth: “It’s just a phase.”
Reality: Non-binary people exist across cultures and generations. It’s not a trend—it’s a real identity.
  • Myth: “There are only two genders.”
Reality: Gender is a social and cultural construct, and many societies have always recognized more than two.
  • Myth: “Pronouns are just grammar.”
Reality: Pronouns are about respect. Using correct pronouns affirms someone’s identity and prevents harm.

Why This Education Matters

Non-binary people often face higher rates of discrimination, misgendering, and erasure. By learning about non-binary identities, respecting pronouns, and challenging myths, allies can help reduce stigma and create safer environments for all.

Non-binary people are not a “new phenomenon” or a “phase”—they are vital, valid, and vibrant members of our community. By honoring the non-binary flag, respecting pronouns, and breaking down harmful myths, we move closer to a world where everyone can live authentically and with pride.
