Welcome to Episode 1 of our educational series on LGBTQ+ identities. Today we’re diving into the basics of bisexuality—what it means, the history of its flag, and why breaking down myths is key to supporting the bi+ community.

Defining Bisexuality

Bisexuality is the capacity to feel romantic or sexual attraction to more than one gender. That doesn’t mean attraction is equal or identical across genders—it simply recognizes the fluid, expansive way that attraction can manifest. Bisexuality is valid whether someone is attracted mostly to one gender, equally to multiple, or anywhere in between.

According to many studies, bisexual people make up the largest portion of the LGBTQ+ community, yet often remain the most invisible due to persistent stereotypes and erasure.

The Bisexual Pride Flag

The Bisexual Pride Flag was designed by Michael Page in 1998 to give visibility to the bisexual community. Its colors are both symbolic and powerful:

  • 💖 Magenta: Attraction to the same gender
  • 💜 Lavender: Attraction across multiple genders (the blending of magenta and blue)
  • 💙 Blue: Attraction to a different gender

Flying the bisexual flag affirms pride, visibility, and belonging for a community often told it doesn’t exist. You can explore it in our store: 👉 Bisexual Pride Flag.

Myths & Realities

Unfortunately, bisexual people are surrounded by misconceptions. Let’s set the record straight:

  • Myth: “Pick a side.”
Reality: Attraction isn’t a binary. Bisexuality is its own orientation—not a pitstop between “straight” and “gay.”
  • Myth: “Bi people are just confused.”
Reality: Self-discovery isn’t confusion. Bisexual people know who they are and deserve to be believed.
  • Myth: “Bisexuality doesn’t exist in relationships.”
Reality: A person’s current partner doesn’t erase their orientation. A bi person in a same-gender or different-gender relationship is still bisexual.

Why This Education Matters

Bi erasure and stigma have real consequences: higher rates of mental health struggles, lack of representation in media, and a sense of isolation. By learning, unlearning, and sharing accurate information, allies and community members can create a culture where bisexual people feel seen and celebrated.

Bisexuality is not confusion, indecision, or erasure—it’s a vibrant, valid identity. The bisexual pride flag reminds us of the power of visibility, and each myth we bust clears space for more authentic, joyful living. Education is pride in action, and it’s how we ensure that bisexual voices are no longer silenced but celebrated.
