The Birth of Boston Pride
In the wake of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Greenwich Village, New York, the Homophile Coordinating Council was established in Boston in 1970. This council initiated the city's first Lesbian & Gay Pride Celebration, featuring a week of engaging LGBTQ-related workshops and forums, culminating in a vibrant gay dance at Charles Street Meetinghouse.
The First Parade and Its Roots
The inaugural Boston Gay Pride Parade took place in 1971, with around 300 enthusiastic marchers. The procession began near the Homophile Health Center at the corner of Tremont and Boylston Streets. From the outset, Boston Pride was marked by a spirit of activism, with participants demanding equal rights and anti-discrimination laws in social, employment, and housing spheres. This strong political foundation has continued to define Boston Pride over the years.
