Every year on November 20th, communities around the world come together for Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) — a day dedicated to honoring the trans and gender-diverse people whose lives were taken by acts of violence. This day is not only about looking back — it’s also about committing to a safer, more affirming future for trans people everywhere.

At Pride Palace, we believe in visibility, education, and empowerment. Today, we honor those we’ve lost, uplift the trans community, and reflect on what each of us can do to create meaningful change.

What Is TDOR and Why It Matters

TDOR was founded in 1999 to honor the life of Rita Hester, a Black transgender woman whose death sparked a movement demanding recognition and justice. Her story — and the stories of so many others — remind us that violence against trans people is not new. It is systemic, global, and deeply rooted in transphobia.

TDOR exists so that their names, courage, and lives are never forgotten. It calls us to remember — but also to learn, speak up, and act.

Why Trans Lives Are Still Under Threat

Trans communities, especially Black and Brown trans women, continue to face disproportionate rates of violence, discrimination, and homelessness. In many regions, trans people are denied basic rights: health care, safe housing, employment opportunities, and legal protections.

And while TDOR honors those we’ve lost, it also highlights the ongoing reality: trans people deserve safety, dignity, and the freedom to live without fear.

How to Observe TDOR Respectfully

Observing TDOR is about centering trans voices, honoring lives, and creating space for healing. Here are meaningful ways to participate:

  • Attend a vigil: Many cities and LGBTQ+ centers host gatherings that uplift names and stories.
  • Learn about those lost: Read their names, learn their histories, and honor their humanity.
  • Hold space for grief: TDOR can be emotionally heavy. Allow room for reflection, conversation, and support.
  • Share verified information: Misinformation harms trans people. Use your voice to amplify truth and compassion.

  • Donate when you’re able: Mutual aid and trans-led organizations change lives.

TDOR is a reminder, of loss, resilience, and the continued fight for justice. But it is also a promise: that we will honor the past by protecting the future.

We remember. We honor. And we fight for a world where every trans person can live safely, freely, and proudly.
