The internet was supposed to be a place where LGBTQ+ people could connect, express themselves freely, and build chosen family when the world outside felt unsafe.
But GLAAD’s latest Social Media Safety Index confirms what many of us already knew:
👉 Social media still isn’t safe for queer and trans people.
Despite the rainbow logos in June, the pride campaigns, and the inclusive filters — the actual platforms are failing to protect us. And we're tired.
❌ The Numbers Don’t Lie
GLAAD reviewed five major platforms: Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and X (formerly Twitter). None of them received a passing score on user safety for LGBTQ+ people.
This means:
- Slurs and hate speech are still allowed to stay up
- Deadnaming and misgendering are rarely addressed
- Algorithms continue to amplify anti-trans and anti-queer content
- There’s no transparency or accountability around moderation
These aren’t “bugs” — they’re the result of deliberate inaction. And they’re hurting our communities.
🧠 The Emotional Cost of Being Online
What might look like “just a comment” to some can lead to real harm for LGBTQ+ people.
The constant exposure to hate, invisibility, and invalidation fuels anxiety, depression, and gender dysphoria. It erodes our sense of safety, belonging, and even identity.

🛑 Visibility Without Protection Isn’t Progress
We’ve seen it before: brands celebrating Pride for engagement while failing to moderate their own pages. Platforms launching queer content series while silencing LGBTQ+ creators in their algorithms.
Visibility without protection is not enough.
It’s time to demand more than surface-level support. We need:
- Transparent moderation policies
- Real enforcement against hate speech
- Gender-inclusive content rules
- Safe, affirming spaces — not just colorful logos
So What Can We Do?
Until platforms truly step up, we show up for each other. Here’s how:
- Use your platform to amplify queer creators
- Report hate, but also support those targeted
- Create safe online circles for LGBTQ+ friends
- Shop and follow LGBTQ+-led brands and projects

You Deserve to Be Safe Online
If you’ve ever muted yourself online to avoid harassment — we see you.
If you’ve had a post taken down for being “too queer” — we believe you.
If you’ve built a little space of safety on the internet — we thank you.
And if you’ve ever thought you were alone in this? You’re not. We’re building something better. Together.
Because social media shouldn’t just be where we go to be visible — it should be where we go to be safe, supported, and celebrated.
